Function in skin biology
Ectoin is a cyclic amino acid derivative originally identified in extremophile microorganisms that survive in high-salinity, high-temperature and high-UV environments. These organisms produce ectoin as a compatible solute to stabilise their cellular structures under environmental stress. In cosmetic research, ectoin has been evaluated for its capacity to help skin cells maintain structural stability and comfort when exposed to environmental stressors such as UV, pollution and dryness.
Why Ambernay uses it
Ectoin is selected where a formula objective includes supporting skin comfort under environmental load — for example in barrier-support or sensitised-skin contexts. It is valued for its stability and its compatibility with sensitive-skin formulas, where lower irritation potential is a priority.
Where concentration matters
Ectoin is typically formulated at 0.5–2% in cosmetic products. Functional benefit has been associated with concentrations in this range in published cosmetic research; higher concentrations have not shown proportionally greater benefit in most study contexts.
What we do not claim
We do not claim that ectoin treats sunburn, repairs UV damage or prevents skin cancer. We do not claim it has anti-inflammatory or therapeutic effects. Ectoin in a cosmetic formula is evaluated as a comfort and stability active, not a pharmaceutical.

Best paired with
Ectoin pairs well with niacinamide and panthenol in formulas aimed at sensitised or reactive skin, and does not interfere with UV filter performance.
