The three functional layers of moisturisation
Why the distinction matters
Moisturiser is not a single category. The word describes any product that helps skin feel and appear more hydrated — but the mechanism by which it does so varies significantly depending on which functional ingredients are used, in what proportion and in what order. Understanding humectants, emollients and occlusives explains why application sequence matters and why a single-ingredient moisturiser will almost always underperform a well-architected formula.
Humectants — drawing water in
Humectants are hygroscopic molecules that attract and retain water. They draw moisture from lower layers of the skin (and from the environment when ambient humidity is above approximately 70%) into the stratum corneum.
Common cosmetic humectants: Glycerin, Panthenol (provitamin B5), Hyaluronic acid, Sodium PCA, Urea (at low concentrations), Aloe vera.
Formula context: Humectants are typically applied early in a routine — in the first layers after cleansing — to deposit hydration into the skin before subsequent steps seal it in.
Limitation: Humectants alone, particularly in low-humidity environments, can draw water from deeper skin layers toward the surface and allow it to evaporate. This is why occlusion matters.
Emollients — smoothing and softening
Emollients fill the spaces between skin cells in the stratum corneum, improving surface texture and contributing to skin smoothness and suppleness. They do not primarily add water — they improve the feel of the skin surface and contribute to the barrier feel.
Common cosmetic emollients: Squalane, Isopropyl myristate, Fatty alcohols (cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol), Plant oils (jojoba, rosehip, marula), Dimethicone.
Formula context: Emollients contribute to the texture of the formula — they determine how a moisturiser feels on skin, how it spreads and how quickly it absorbs. Selecting the right emollient mix is a formulation skill, not simply an ingredient preference.
Occlusives — sealing and preventing loss
Occlusives form a physical layer on the skin surface that slows transepidermal water loss (TEWL). They do not add water themselves — they prevent the water already in the skin from evaporating. At higher concentrations they can feel heavy; at lower concentrations they contribute to barrier protection without occlusive heaviness.
Common cosmetic occlusives: Petrolatum (the most effective), Beeswax, Lanolin, Dimethicone (moderate occlusion), Shea butter, Ceramides (barrier function contributor).
Formula context: Occlusives are most useful in dry skin formulas, barrier-support contexts and overnight formulas. In daily-use formulas for normal or combination skin, the occlusive fraction is lower to prevent congestion and allow comfortable layering with SPF.

Both Ambernay moisturisers — Hydra-Rich and Hydra-Calm — are formulated using a three-tier hydration architecture: a humectant base, an emollient layer and a measured occlusive fraction calibrated to the skin type objective.
- Hydra-Rich Moisturizer — higher emollient and humectant density for dry and dehydrated skin.
- Hydra-Calm Moisturizer — fragrance-free, lower reactive-ingredient load, calibrated for sensitised and barrier-compromised skin.

Moisturisers help skin feel and appear more hydrated. They support barrier function in a cosmetic sense. We do not claim that any Ambernay moisturiser repairs structural skin damage, treats skin conditions or delivers pharmaceutical-level intervention.
Claim caution / regulatory note
Moisturiser efficacy claims in cosmetic regulation must be substantiated by consumer panel data, biophysical measurement (corneometry, TEWL) or dermatologist-led study. Claims must remain within cosmetic function — they cannot cross into drug territory (treatment, repair, reversal of pathological process).
